LOCATION: East Wanneroo, Western Australia
PROJECT TYPE/SERVICES: Urban Design / Built-form Concepts / Concept Sketch Visuals
CLIENT: WA Department of Planning Lands & Heritage
Concept images were created for WA DPLH to develop built form concepts for the purpose of demonstrating the urban design intent of the EAST WANNEROO DISTRICT STRUCTURE PLAN which was released as a draft for public comment in September 2019.
A series of 8 sketch concept images (including 1 photo-montage) depict aspects of the project in different locations throughout East Wanneroo and aim to show how the built outcome of the structure plan may look.
The concept sketches were developed from SketchUp 3D models based on liaison with DPLH and a comprehensive written brief and sketch plans.
Four realistically rendered design sections were developed to also help convey the intent of the structure plan.

LOCATION: A-Shed, Victoria Quay, Fremantle Harbour, Western Australia
PROJECT TYPE/SERVICES: Concept Sketch Visual
CLIENT: Gage Roads Beer Co. & Finespun Architecture
The Western Australian Government wanted a transformative project to revitalize the run-down, nearly 100 year old A-shed on Victoria Quay at Fremantle Harbour.
Inspired by loose concept sketch ideas from Finespun Architecture & Gage Roads Beer Co., the vision sketch produced within a tight deadline and budget, ultimately helped Gage Roads win the project ahead of several other competing teams.
Gage Roads required the single image to capture and express their vision of a large successful, family friendly hospitality venue showcasing it’s harbourside location and maritime history.
Well recognised landmark features such as the WA Maritime Museum (behind) and tall ship (The STS Leeuwin ll) along with a local dolphin pod, cleverly wove a compelling story demonstrating the power of a hybrid traditional/digital rendering technique vs the more ubiquitous photorealism.

LOCATION: Rottnest Island Lodge, Rottnest Island, Western Australia
PROJECT TYPE/SERVICES: Concept Sketch Visual
CLIENT: Place Development
This evocative aerial view sketch helped Place Development Australia win the project in a shortlist of six respondents.
The proposed revamp will include a wellness day spa, restaurant, hotel, beach lounge and new pool. It will replace the existing Rottnest Island Lodge site, currently trading as Karma Resort and will cost $40 million.
The 94-room hotel is expected to become the new “heart” of the island and will add new buildings while upgrading the existing complex.
Place Development director Robert Bates-Smith said the new low impact, light-touch redevelopment would be a “welcoming and inclusive resort” that paid respects to the island’s Indigenous significance.

Mike Edwards Architecture worked in collaboration with Nicola Gibson Architect to provide two compelling 3D sketch images to help communicate a proposed major upgrade to the multi-storey residential student accommodation buildings originally constructed in the 1970's.
Production of the images required an on-site visit with the architects. Suitable explanatory and panoramic photographs were taken and advice was provided on optimum viewpoints to visualise the proposal.
The existing buildings and proposed design modifications were accurately modelled in SketchUp as a basis for two panoramic sketch views involving photomontage techniques and Photoshop post editing.
